I find Cairns is one of those places that you end up visiting several times, similar to that of Bangkok. It is usually your entry or departure point in Australia, somewhere you may have a few days before and after any agricultural work or simply just somewhere you come for a short holiday from working in the cities. I visited 3 times throughout my time in Australia, and enjoyed it each time. It was by far not my favorite places but not a bad one to find yourself in more than once!
With the man-made lagoon, decent nightlife, wide range of food and food and shopping options, it is a nice place to be. Not forgetting that it is the most popular place to depart from for your Great Barrier Reef excursion, and a good place to try and find work for those long term travellers.
